Michael Eden – Form and Transform

Photo of Michael Eden with some of his work.

Michael Eden is an award-winning ceramic artist and maker, internationally recognised as one of the first makers to engage with and realise the creative potential of new technology including 3D printing and scanning. His work sits at the intersection of craft, design, art and technology, exploring contemporary themes through historical, culturally familiar objects.

We are delighted to welcome ceramic artist and maker, Michael Eden, to our next Rhino UK User Group Meeting.

Michael’s work sits at the intersection of craft, design, art and technology with Michael incorporating the use of Rhino in his work since his time as a student at the Royal College of Art in 2006.

For his 2018 major solo exhibition at Waddesdon Manor in Buckinghamshire, Michael Eden was able to scan a number of rare 18th century French porcelain vases and use them as the basis for re-interpretations. When they were made, the finely crafted and highly decorated ceramics were technically highly advanced and Michael’s aim was to bring their story into the 21st century through the use of the technology that is available to artists, makers and designers.

Though Michael has employed Rhino 3D software since he was a Royal College of Art student between 2006 and 2008, he still approaches his work as an artist and craftsman, having previously spent over 20 years as a potter.

Following Michael’s presentation we’ll have the opportunity for a live Q&A session with Michael. We hope you can join us and we look forward to seeing you on the 6th October.

3D Printing with Rhino and the Formlabs Form 2 SLA 3D Printer https://rhino3d.co.uk/3d-printing/3d-printing-with-rhino-and-the-formlabs-form-2-sla-3d-printer/ Tue, 06 Nov 2018 16:18:22 +0000 https://www.rhino3d.co.uk/?p=1029 In this Simply Rhino video we look at preparing a Rhino Model for 3D Printing on the Formlabs Form 2 printer. We look at creating a valid STL file from our Rhino model and move through the SLA printing workflow.

In this Simply Rhino video we look at preparing a Rhino Model for 3D Printing on the Formlabs Form 2 printer.

The starting point is our Rhino model of a scraper and we take a look at the various steps we need to go through in order to create a successful 3D print.

The overriding principle in the first stage of the workflow is that the geometry needs to be built correctly in Rhino, before creating the mesh STL file.

We then take our valid STL file in to PreForm which is Formlabs’ print preparation software for their 3D printers. In PreForm you choose the best layout, orientation and support to ensure a successful print.

When we’re happy with our .form file (this is the file type that PreForm creates) we send this to print on the Form 2. The Form 2 prints using inverted (upside down) stereolithography (SLA) 3D print technology. SLA 3D printing uses a laser to cure solid isotropic parts from a liquid photopolymer resin. In our video we print using Formlabs Grey Resin, which is great for general purpose prototyping and design and excellent for capturing small details.

Once our print is built we go through the process of removing the print from the printer and cleaning the print on the build platform with the Form Wash. Finally we remove the print from the build platform and get to look at our final 3 printed pieces which fit together to make up our scraper.

If you’d like to learn more or get hands on with the Form 2 printer then you can contact us or visit us at the Simply Rhino Formlabs London Showroom.

Formlabs News Announcement from Simply Rhino

We are pleased to announce that Simply Rhino are now official resellers for Formlabs materials and Printers.  After some years of research Simply Rhino settled on the Form 2 as a great fit for a large proportion of their Rhino customers from across the UK, Senior Rhino software Instructor Phil Cook comments further:

“For many years Rhino has been a key tool for our customers in design and engineering to accurately develop designs from initial concept to final production. For many of these creative businesses and individuals, the ability to rapidly create prototype parts whether for aesthetic consideration or engineering validation is essential. Until recently the choice for high quality 3D printing was either to invest in bulky expensive equipment or to use a bureau, as affordable smaller desktop printing solutions lacked the necessary reliability or resolution and very often both. The Form 2 from Formlabs brings reliable, high quality 3D printing to the desktop at an affordable cost and allows for production in a variety of resins. Print-ready, watertight models can be made and verified in Rhino and exported easily to the Formlabs PreForm software.”

Simply Rhino have a dedicated Formlabs Showroom in London, where they hold stock of Form 2 Printers plus Resins and other consumables.
